What can we learn about the characteristic attributes that caused Hollywood stylists to have these iconic TV characters wearing pearls? #shoppearls
1. Alexis Colby
TV Guide named her #7 in their 2013 list of "The 60 Nastiest Villains of All Time". Joan Collins’ iconic Dynasty character was definitely in for pearls. Alexis, or in her full name, Alexis Morell Carrington Colby Dexter Rowan, had always been the most glamorous character in the show with the over-the-top clothes and jewelry, and symbolized abundance and success. Champagne, caviar and a pearl necklace was just a Tuesday for her.
2. Maddie Hayes
The owner of Blue Moon Detective Agency, portrayed by Cybill Shepherd, is a former model who finds herself bankrupt in the show Moonlighting. The show introduced Bruce Willis to the world and was mostly successful due to the outstanding chemistry of Shepherd and Willis, who adapted some of their real mannerisms and clothing styles into their characters’ show. Maddie’s selection of jewelry during the show was intentional, to separate herself from the ‘stupid model’ prejudice, and to be seen as smart and reliable.
3. Wilhelmina Slater
The ‘evil’ editor of Mode in the high-rated dramady show Ugly Betty was brilliantly portrayed by Vanessa Williams. The conceited, self-absorbed diva and former supermodel lives for two things: MODE and Botox. Much of Wilhelmina's sophisticated wardrobe revolves around the colors white, silver, gold, and brown and more often than not includes matching pearl earrings. In one episode, Wilhelmina is referred to as "A Chanel suit with an office." The character is inspired by Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who, like Wilhelmina, is famous/notorious for her demanding elitism and for wearing fur.
4. Alicia Florrick The wife of the Cook County State's Attorney is the center of the show The Good Wife. The character, portrayed by Julianna Margulies, returns to her career in law after the events of a public sex and political corruption scandal involving her husband. In the main image of the show the character is seen with a pearl necklace, and it’s no coincidence: a pearl necklace is both neutral and sophisticated. It sends a message of “I’m good and respectable” but also “I understand fashion.” 5. Spencer Hastings In the highly successful teen show Pretty Little Liars, Spencer, portrayed by Troian Bellisario, is part of the extremely rich, powerful, old family Hastings. She is one of the five main girls on the show, and is always portrayed as smart and mature. Spencer was a thinker. She was cautious, dedicated to goals and a good planner of getting out of trouble elegantly. It’s no surprise that she was often seen wearing pearls.
